🛠A New Tool in the Fly Control Toolbox 🪰
Cargill has partnered with Central Life Sciences to develop a fly control bolus containing Altosid® IGR to help give cattle producers more flexibility and options when it comes to horn fly control.
Altosid® IGR XRB delivers horn fly control with the same method utilized in the rest of the Altosid® IGR product line, relying on the animal to distribute the active ingredient in the manure. After the bolus is orally administered, it settles into the cow’s rumen where it will dissolve over time, releasing the active ingredient, (S)-methoprene, consistently for up to 195 days. This ensures that cows receive consistent, season-long horn fly control. The active ingredient is then passed through to the cow’s manure where horn flies lay eggs. By disrupting the horn fly life cycle, it effectively prevents the development of pupae into biting adult flies.
When should Altosid® IGR XRB be administered to cattle? 🐂 Altosid® IGR XRB should be administered 30 days before horn flies begin to appear or 30 days prior to the average last frost date in your area. This ensures your herd is protected against an unpredictably early start to the horn fly season.

Karson Osborn is our final 2025 #SummerIntern to highlight and we’re stoked to have him on the team!
Starting at a young age, Osborn grew up showing and raising pigs and has developed a strong passion for the Berkshire breed which is what his family primarily raises.
“My passion for swine and the agriculture industry brought me to the Midwest, where I have spent the past two years as a member of the Livestock Judging Team at Black Hawk East.”
This fall, Osborn plans to further his collegiate livestock judging career at the university level, while pursuing a degree in Agricultural Business.
“I’m excited to work with the Earlybird team this summer to not only learn from some of the best minds in the industry about salesmanship and nutrition, but to also develop more connections and relationships across the country.”
You’ll be seeing Karson, Brenna, and Maggie out and about A LOT this summer! 🎉
